How to Crop, Rotate and Flip a Photo Online (Exact Ratios and Pixel Sizes)
On this page
Short answer: to crop a photo, open Imgovo’s Crop Image, add the photo, choose a ratio or an exact pixel size, move the box and download the result. To fix a sideways or mirrored photo, use Rotate & Flip. Both run in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Crop a photo
- Open Crop Image and add a photo by dragging it in, choosing a file or pasting from the clipboard. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, HEIC, TIFF, SVG, PPM and camera RAW files are accepted.
- Choose how to crop:
- Freeform for any shape, or Original ratio to keep the photo’s own shape.
- Square 1:1 or the Golden ratio.
- A ratio from the groups Photo & Print (3:2, 2:3, 4:3, 3:4, 5:4, 4:5, 7:5, 5×7, 8×10), Screen & Video (16:9, 9:16, 16:10, 14:9, 19:10, 2:1), Wide & Panorama (21:9, 32:9, 3:1, 4:1) or Cinema (1.375:1, 1.85:1, 2.20:1).
- Custom width and height for your own ratio.
- Drag inside the box to move it and drag a corner or an edge to resize it. With the keyboard, the arrow keys move the box, Shift + arrows resize it, and Alt gives 1-pixel steps.
- Check the readouts for the selection size and the result size.
- Download the cropped image.
Use Swap to switch between portrait and landscape, and use Undo and Redo (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z) to step back through changes.
Crop to an exact pixel size
Choose “Crop and resize to exact pixels” and type the width and height, or pick a preset. If your selection has fewer pixels than the target, the tool asks whether to enlarge it (the result may look soft) or keep the selection’s own pixels, which gives a smaller result. It never makes that choice silently.
The presets include:
- Instagram: square post 1080 × 1080, portrait post 4:5 at 1080 × 1350, story 1080 × 1920.
- YouTube: thumbnail 3840 × 2160 (or 1280 × 720 for a smaller file), channel art 2560 × 1440.
- Facebook: cover 851 × 315, wide post 1200 × 628.
- LinkedIn: feed image 1200 × 627, cover 1584 × 396.
- X: header 1500 × 500, landscape 1200 × 675.
- Pinterest: standard pin 1000 × 1500.
- Screens and paper: Full HD 1920 × 1080, 4K UHD 3840 × 2160, A4 2480 × 3508 at 300 PPI.
Platforms change their recommendations, so the page marks entries as Official, Common or Legacy and says when they were last checked. Verify the current size before you publish. For a full overview, see the social media image sizes cheat sheet.
Choose the format
You can save as JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, TIFF or PDF. PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF and PDF keep transparency. JPG and BMP cannot, so transparent areas get a background colour (white by default) and the tool tells you. If you save as PDF, the page can be the same size as the picture, A4 or US Letter, centred.
Rotate and flip a photo
Open Rotate & Flip, add the photo and use the buttons:
- Rotate left 90° and Rotate right 90°.
- Flip horizontal (mirror left to right) and Flip vertical (mirror top to bottom).
- Reset to return to the original.
You can combine them in any order. To fix a photo that is both sideways and mirrored, rotate first and then flip. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP for the download.
Why a photo looks sideways
Cameras and phones often store a picture in one orientation and add an orientation tag saying how to display it. Some programs and websites ignore the tag, so the photo appears sideways. When you rotate it in Imgovo, the pixels are saved upright, so it looks the same everywhere.
Mirrored selfies
Front cameras sometimes save a mirror image. Use Flip horizontal to correct it. This is useful when the photo contains text.
Does it affect quality?
- Rotating in 90° steps and flipping do not resample or blur pixels.
- PNG is lossless. JPG and WebP are re-compressed at 95% quality.
- Cropping removes the outer pixels and keeps the rest unchanged.
- Scaling above the selection’s size cannot add detail.
Good habits when cropping
- Crop for the destination. Choose the ratio before you drag the box, so you do not have to correct it later.
- Keep room around the subject. A little space in the direction a person is looking makes a picture feel more balanced.
- Do not crop to a tiny area. If the result has far fewer pixels than the original, it can look soft when enlarged. For print, check the size with the DPI & Size Calculator.
- Keep the original. Cropping creates a new file, so you can always try again.
Many photos at once
If you need the same ratio for dozens of photos, use the batch tool instead. How to crop, resize and rename many photos at once explains it. If you want to post a whole photo on Instagram without a crop, see Instagram No Crop.
Privacy
Cropping uses the HTML5 Canvas API in your browser. The saved file contains pixel data only, so camera details and GPS location are not carried over.
Try it now
Open Crop Image to cut a photo to a ratio or exact size, or Rotate & Flip to fix its direction.
Frequently asked questions
Does cropping reduce the quality of my photo?
No. Cropping only removes the edge pixels. The pixels that remain are unchanged. Quality is affected only by what you do after cropping, such as saving as a lossy format or enlarging the result.
Can I crop to an exact size such as 1080 × 1080 pixels?
Yes. Choose "Crop and resize to exact pixels" and type the width and height, or pick a preset for Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, screens or paper sizes.
Why does my photo look sideways on some devices?
Many cameras store the rotation in an orientation tag, and some software ignores it. Rotating the photo in Imgovo saves the pixels upright, so it looks correct everywhere.
How do I fix a mirrored selfie?
Use Flip horizontal. If the photo is both sideways and mirrored, rotate it first and then flip it.
Can I rotate by a free angle such as 7°?
No. The Rotate & Flip tool turns the photo in 90° steps (90°, 180° and 270°) and flips it horizontally or vertically. These changes do not resample the pixels.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Cropping, rotating and flipping run in your browser, and your photo never leaves your device.
