Blur Image Background
Keep the subject sharp and blur everything behind it — like a portrait-mode photo. The AI model runs in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device. Adjust the blur, touch up the mask with the brushes and save at full resolution.
This is a photographic effect, not a way to anonymise people or hide private details — useBlur & Pixelate for that. To cut the subject out instead, tryRemove Background.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to blur the background?
No. The AI model runs inside your browser, on your own device. Only the model itself (a static file from imgovo.com) is downloaded — after you choose a photo, and kept in your browser afterwards. Your photo is never sent to any server.
Is this a safe way to hide faces or private details?
No. Blur Background is a photographic effect that makes the subject stand out. It is not anonymisation: faces, text or documents in the background can remain recognisable, especially with a low blur amount, and blurred content can sometimes still be guessed. To hide faces, licence plates or text, use Blur & Pixelate and its “Black box” option.
How is the subject kept sharp without halos?
The photo is blurred using only background pixels, so the subject’s colours never smear into the background, and the edge colours of the cut-out are cleaned so no old background tint remains around hair or outlines. You can switch the edge clean-up off to compare.
What if the wrong part stays sharp?
Use the Erase brush on parts that should be blurred and the Restore brush on parts that should stay sharp. Every stroke can be undone, and “Reset edits” starts over. Try “Maximum” quality for difficult edges.
How big is the download, and when does it happen?
Nothing is downloaded when you open the page. The model is fetched only after you choose a photo and start: about 5 MB for “Fast”, about 46 MB for “Balanced” and “Maximum”, plus a 14 MB engine file. The sizes are shown first, and the model is stored in your browser so it is downloaded once.
Does it keep the full resolution of my photo?
Yes. The model looks at a reduced copy, but the saved photo is rendered from your original pixels at their original size, strip by strip, so large photos work on devices with limited memory.
Which photos work best?
Portraits, pets and products that clearly stand out. Glass, very fine hair against a similar background and photos without an obvious main subject can need touch-ups with the brushes.
Does the saved file contain my photo’s metadata?
No. The result is built from the pixels only, so camera details, date and GPS location are not copied into the new file.
