Short answer: Instagram crops photos that do not match its frame. To keep the whole picture, place it inside a frame of the right shape (square, 4:5 or 9:16) and fill the leftover space with a blurred copy of the photo or a solid colour. Imgovo’s Instagram No Crop tool does this in your browser.

Why photos get cut

Every post is displayed inside a frame with a fixed shape. A landscape photo is much wider than a portrait or square frame, and a tall phone photo can be taller than the frame allows. When shapes do not match, there are only two options: crop the image, or fit it inside with empty space around it.

Instagram usually crops, or asks you to choose the crop. If you want the full picture, you do the fitting yourself before uploading. You add the space, and you decide what goes into it.

The frames Imgovo offers

Frame Ratio Typical use Size at standard setting
Square 1:1 Feed posts 1080 × 1080
Portrait 4:5 Feed posts 1080 × 1350
Story / Reels 9:16 Stories and Reels covers 1080 × 1920
Landscape 1.91:1 Wide posts set by the tool

Instagram’s supported feed ratios and the way posts appear on profiles have changed more than once. Check Instagram’s current guidance before you plan a series of posts. The sizes in this table describe what Imgovo produces, not a promise about what Instagram will display.

Step by step

  1. Open Instagram No Crop. It works with JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF and other formats.
  2. Add your photo.
  3. Choose the frame. For a feed post, 4:5 portrait takes up more screen space than a square, so it is a common pick for tall or square photos. A wide photo fits a square more naturally.
  4. Choose the background (see below).
  5. Adjust the settings if needed. The defaults are a blur of 60, background darkening of 15% and no border.
  6. Choose the resolution: 1080 px wide, or 2160 px for extra sharpness.
  7. Choose JPG or PNG and download.

You can undo and redo changes with the buttons or with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z.

Blurred or solid background?

Background Looks good with Watch out for
Blurred photo Most photos, landscapes, portraits, travel Too much blur can look flat. Lower the blur or darken slightly to bring the photo forward.
White Products, documents, artwork, light feeds Can look stark next to a dark photo
Black Night shots, dark scenes, video thumbnails Dark photos can disappear into it
Custom colour Brand colours, matching a theme Pick a colour that supports the photo, not one that fights it

The border setting adds breathing room around the photo. It is off by default. A small border can make a photo with a solid background look more deliberate.

Which format to download

JPG is the normal choice for photos. PNG is meant for graphics with text or sharp edges and creates larger files. Instagram re-compresses what you post in its own way, so a very large PNG does not give you a visible advantage for a photo.

Fitting vs resizing vs cropping

These are three different jobs:

  • Fitting keeps the entire picture and adds a background. This is what Instagram No Crop does.
  • Cropping removes part of the picture so it matches the shape. Use Crop Image when you want to choose exactly what stays.
  • Resizing changes the pixel dimensions. The Social Media Resizer resizes to exact platform sizes by cropping from the centre. It does not add a background.

If you want a post that is exactly the platform’s shape and you do not mind losing the edges, use the resizer. If you must show the whole photo, use No Crop. For more on pixels, read How to resize an image without losing quality.

Other platforms

The same frames work for other places where you need a specific shape, such as Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp status, Pinterest and profile banners. For a table of sizes by platform, see the social media image sizes cheat sheet.

Privacy note

The new image is created from pixels only, so camera details and GPS location in the original are not copied into it. If you also post original files elsewhere, read How to remove GPS location and EXIF data from photos.

Do it now

Open Instagram No Crop, add your photo and pick the frame.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Instagram crop my photo?

Instagram shows photos in fixed frames. If your picture has a different shape from the frame, the app crops it or asks you to crop it. Fitting the photo into the frame yourself, with a background filling the extra space, avoids that.

What size should I use for a portrait post?

Imgovo's 4:5 frame is 1080 × 1350 px, the 1:1 square is 1080 × 1080 px and the story/Reels frame is 1080 × 1920 px. Check Instagram's current guidance, because supported ratios have changed over time.

Should I choose a blurred or a solid background?

A blurred copy of the photo usually looks natural and matches the colours. White or black can look cleaner for documents, products and artwork. Choose whichever suits the picture.

Will the quality drop?

The photo is placed into the frame at 1080 px wide, or 2160 px wide if you choose the extra-sharp option. Instagram then compresses uploads in its own way, which you cannot control.

Is my photo uploaded to Imgovo?

No. The image is created in your browser and does not leave your device. The new image is saved from pixels only, so EXIF data such as GPS location and camera details is not included.
