Remove Image Background
Cut a person, pet or product out of a photo — transparent, white or on a colour of your choice. The AI model runs in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device. Finish the edges with the Erase and Restore brushes and save the result at full resolution.
Works best for people, animals and products that clearly stand out. Glass, very fine hair against a similar background and pictures without a clear main subject can need touch-ups. Want the background blurred instead? Try Blur Background.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?
No. The AI model runs inside your browser, on your own device. Only the model itself (a static file from imgovo.com) is downloaded — the first time you use the tool, and kept in your browser afterwards. Your photo is never sent to any server.
How big is the download, and when does it happen?
Nothing is downloaded when you open the page. The model is fetched only after you choose a photo and start the cut-out: about 5 MB for “Fast” and about 46 MB for “Balanced” and “Maximum”, plus a 14 MB engine file. The sizes are shown before you start, and the model is stored in your browser so you download it only once.
Which photos work best?
People, pets, products and other objects that clearly stand out from the background. The model was trained for general “salient object” cut-outs, so it finds the most prominent subject (or subjects) in the picture. It can struggle with glass and other see-through objects, with very fine hair or fur against a similar-coloured background, with shadows and reflections, and with pictures that have no obvious main subject. In those cases try “Maximum” quality and finish the edges with the Erase and Restore brushes.
Does it keep the full resolution of my photo?
Yes. The model looks at a reduced copy of the picture, but the file you download is rendered from your original pixels at their original size. Very large photos are processed in strips, so a device with limited memory can still save them. If the device truly cannot, you get a clear message instead of a broken file.
How do I fix leftover background or a missing piece?
Use the Erase brush to paint leftover background away and the Restore brush to bring back parts that were cut off. Brush size and edge softness are adjustable, every stroke can be undone with Undo / Redo (Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z), and “Reset edits” puts everything back. Zoom in for fine work; on a phone, use “Move / scroll” to move around the zoomed picture.
What does “Clean up edge colours” do?
Around hair and edges, pixels often still carry a tint of the old background (a green or white fringe, for example). This option estimates the true colour of the subject at those pixels, so the cut-out looks clean on any new background. You can switch it off to compare.
Which formats can I save?
PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG does not support transparency, so it is available only when you choose a white or coloured background.
Does the saved file contain my photo’s metadata?
No. The result is built from the pixels only, so camera details, date and GPS location in the original are not copied into the new file. (If you need to remove metadata without changing the picture, use Remove EXIF Data.)
Is it free? Is there a limit?
It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily quota. The only limit is your device: Maximum quality needs the most memory and time, and older phones may take a while or step down to a lighter setting automatically.
Can I use the results commercially?
Your pictures remain yours. The tool runs open-source segmentation models (U²-Net and IS-Net) whose code is under the Apache-2.0 licence. The licence of the trained model weights themselves is not clearly stated by their authors, and we have not resolved that question; see Open-source licenses and the model notice for the exact wording.
