ICO Viewer
Open an .ico file and look inside: every size, color depth and format, drawn on a checkerboard. Save single layers as PNG.
Frequently asked questions
Is my ICO file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read in your browser. Nothing leaves your device.
What does the viewer show?
Every layer inside the .ico file: its size, color depth, whether it is stored as a PNG or as an older bitmap (DIB), the number of bytes it uses, and the picture itself on a checkerboard so transparency is visible.
Which kinds of layers can be shown?
PNG layers and uncompressed bitmap layers with 1, 4, 8, 24 or 32 bits per pixel, including their transparency mask. Layers that use another compression are listed with a note but cannot be drawn.
Can I save a single layer?
Yes. Each layer has a button that saves it as a PNG file, and one button saves all layers together in a ZIP file.
Why does a layer say its size differs?
The file’s directory announces a size for every layer, and the picture inside can say something else. When they differ, the viewer shows the real size of the picture and adds a note.
Why can’t I open a .cur cursor file?
Cursor files look similar to icon files but contain hot spot positions and use a different type number. This viewer is for icons only and says so when you open a cursor.
