Short answer: upload nothing, install nothing. Open Imgovo’s Remove Background tool, choose a photo, and an AI model running in your browser cuts out the subject. You can save it with a transparent, white or coloured background and fix the edges with brushes.

What “runs on your device” means

Many background removers send your photo to a server, where the processing happens, and send a result back. Imgovo’s tool works differently. The AI model is a file that your browser downloads, and the cut-out is calculated on your own computer or phone. The photo is not sent anywhere.

There is a cost to that approach, and it is better to know about it up front.

The first use downloads a model

Opening the page downloads nothing. The model is fetched only after you pick a photo and start the cut-out. According to the tool page:

Quality level Model size Intended for
Fast about 5 MB Older phones and quick tries, less detail
Balanced about 46 MB Good detail on most photos, recommended
Maximum about 46 MB Finest edges, slowest, needs the most memory

An additional engine file of about 14 MB is also downloaded. The model is stored in your browser, so you download it once. On a mobile connection, you may want to wait for Wi-Fi before the first run.

Step by step

  1. Open Remove Background.
  2. Choose a photo. Start with Balanced.
  3. Wait for the model to download on the first use and for the cut-out to finish.
  4. Check the edges at full zoom.
  5. Choose the background: transparent, white or a colour of your choice.
  6. Pick the format and download.

Which format to save

  • PNG: transparent background, the most compatible choice.
  • WebP: transparent background and usually a smaller file. Check that the place you will use it accepts WebP.
  • JPG: solid backgrounds only. JPG cannot store transparency, so use it with the white or coloured background option.

Get a cleaner cut

Automatic cut-outs work best when the subject clearly stands out from its surroundings. A few habits make a big difference:

  • Use a plain or contrasting background when you take the photo. A dark jacket against a dark wall is hard for any tool.
  • Start with good light. Even light helps the model find edges.
  • Keep the subject complete. If a hand or object is cut off by the frame, the tool has less to work with.
  • Step up the quality level if the edges look rough. Maximum takes longer and needs more memory.

The tool can struggle with glass, very fine hair against a similar background, shadows, reflections and pictures without a clear main subject. That is true of the technology in general, not only this tool.

Fix the edges with the brushes

No automatic result is perfect, so the tool includes manual touch-up:

  • Erase removes leftover background.
  • Restore brings back parts of the subject that were cut off.
  • Edge position and softness let you grow or shrink the outline and soften it.
  • Clean up edge colours removes the tint of the old background from the border.
  • Undo and Redo are available, and Reset edits returns to the automatic result.

Zoom in while you paint. On a phone, use the move/scroll option so that you do not paint when you only meant to pan.

Other tools that help

  • Blur Background keeps the background but softens it, for a portrait effect. It is a photo effect and does not anonymise anything in the picture.
  • Round Image crops a picture into a circle or rounded corners and saves a transparent PNG. It is a good second step for profile pictures.

Limits

  • It is free, with no sign-up, watermark or daily quota.
  • The main limit is your device. Maximum quality needs the most memory, and older phones may be slower or may use a lighter setting automatically.
  • Metadata such as camera details and GPS is not copied into the result.

Do it now

Open Remove Background, pick a photo and start with Balanced quality.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded when I remove the background?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and does the work there. Only the model file is downloaded; your photo is not sent to a server.

Why does it download a model the first time?

The cut-out is done by an AI model that has to be on your device to run locally. The download happens after you pick a photo and start the cut-out, and the model is then kept in your browser, so later uses do not download it again.

Which format should I save a cut-out in?

PNG or WebP if you want a transparent background. JPG cannot be transparent, so it is only for a solid background such as white.

Why are the edges rough around hair or glass?

Fine hair against a similar background, glass, reflections and shadows are hard for any automatic cut-out. Try the Maximum quality level, then fix the edges with the Erase and Restore brushes.

Does it reduce the resolution of my photo?

No. The tool keeps your photo's full resolution. Very large photos are processed in strips, and if a device cannot cope you get a message instead of a broken file.
