How to Get a Color Palette from an Image (HEX Codes)
On this page
Short answer: open Imgovo’s Color Palette from Image, add a photo, logo or screenshot, choose how many colors you want and click Extract colors. Click any spot on the picture to read its exact HEX code, then edit the palette and export it as HEX, CSS variables, Tailwind, JSON, a GIMP palette or a PNG/SVG color sheet. Nothing is uploaded.
What you can do with a palette
A palette from a photo is a quick way to pick colors that belong together: for a website, a presentation, a poster or a logo. You can also use it to find the exact HEX code of a color in a screenshot or a brand image.
Step by step
- Open Color Palette from Image and drop an image on the page, click to choose one, or paste from the clipboard. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF and more are accepted. Try an example if you only want to look around.
- Set Colors to extract. Photos contain many similar shades, so 5 or 6 colors give a clean brand palette and 10 to 12 show more detail.
- Choose how colors are picked: Dominant colors, Balanced or Accents.
- Click Extract colors.
- Click a swatch to select it. Use the buttons on a swatch to copy or lock the color.
Pick the exact color of one spot
Click or tap the image. With Exact pixel, Imgovo reads one pixel of the full-size picture, not a scaled copy. Under the picker options you can use the average of 3 × 3 or 5 × 5 pixels instead, which is better for noisy photos. Then choose Add to palette or Replace selected color.
You can also move the cross with the arrow keys and press Enter.
Analyse only part of the picture
Choose Select area and drag a rectangle on the image. The palette is made from that part only; the picture itself is not cropped. Use the whole image returns to the full picture.
Under More options you can ignore near white, near black or the picked color, and set a tolerance. A representative color is the average of a group, so it may not exist as a single pixel. Choose the option for colors present in the image if you need real pixels.
Edit, lock and extend the palette
- Edit a selected color in HEX, RGB, HSL or OKLCH, and give it a name.
- Lock colors you want to keep. Generate and Apply leave locked colors in place.
- Harmonies build complementary, analogous, split-complementary, triadic, tetradic or monochromatic sets from a color.
- Scales make lightness steps, tints, shades or tones, with 5, 9 or 11 steps.
- Variations fill the colors that are not locked, in styles such as pastel, vivid, muted, earthy, monochrome, light UI and dark UI. The picture is not analysed again.
- Undo and Redo (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z) bring back earlier colors and settings.
Export
Under Export you can copy or download the palette as:
- HEX, RGB, HSL or OKLCH lists,
- CSS variables,
- Tailwind CSS v4 or v3,
- JSON or CSV,
- a GIMP palette (
.gpl), - a color sheet as PNG or SVG,
- a PNG with the image and its palette.
Save and share
Saved palettes stay in this browser only; clearing the site data removes them, so export the JSON file as a backup. Copy palette link creates a link that contains only the colors and a short name, never the image. Anyone with the link can see the palette.
Check the colors before you use them
A palette from a photo does not guarantee readable text. Test a text and background pair in the Contrast tab; see How to check color contrast (WCAG).
Privacy
The colors are analysed in your browser. The image never leaves your device and is not saved with the palette.
Try it now
Open Color Palette from Image, add a picture and click a spot to get its HEX code. If your source is an SVG, turn it into a PNG first with the SVG Converter.
Frequently asked questions
How are the palette colors chosen?
Imgovo groups similar colors together (the median cut method used by many design tools) and shows the most important groups. Each swatch is the average of its group, so it matches what you see. The same image and settings always give the same colors.
What does a percentage such as About 34% mean?
It is the part of the analysed visible pixels that belong to that group of similar colors. It is not a count of objects, and not every pixel of the group has exactly that HEX code. Colors you picked, edited or generated have no share.
What is the difference between a representative color and a color present in the image?
A representative color is the average of a group of similar pixels, so it may not appear anywhere in the picture. The option for colors present in the image uses the real pixel of the group that is closest to that average.
How do I get the color of one exact spot?
Click or tap the image. Exact pixel reads one pixel of the full-size picture, not a scaled copy. In the picker options you can average 3 × 3 or 5 × 5 pixels instead. Then choose Add to palette or Replace selected color.
Where are saved palettes stored?
In this browser only, without an account. Clearing the site data or using a private window removes them, so export the JSON file if you want a backup. The original image is never saved with a palette.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The colors are analysed directly in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.
