Short answer: open Imgovo’s Meme Generator, add a photo, type your text, pick a layout and download the result. It runs in your browser, adds no watermark and never uploads your picture.

What you need to bring

The meme generator does not include a library of famous meme images. You supply the photo yourself. That is deliberate: your photo and your words stay yours. It is also a good habit, because many popular meme pictures are photographs, screenshots or film stills that belong to someone else. If you publish a meme widely or commercially, use images you took yourself or have the right to use. This is general advice, not legal advice.

Step by step

  1. Open the Meme Generator.
  2. Drop a photo into the page, click to choose a file, or paste one from the clipboard. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF and more work.
  3. Pick a layout.
  4. Type your text.
  5. Adjust size, outline and position.
  6. Choose the format and size, then download.

Layouts

A layout changes the shape, the bars and the look of the text. Your photo and your words stay the same when you switch.

Layout Look
Classic meme Text at the top and bottom of the photo
Caption bar on top Text on a bar above the photo
Caption bar below Text on a bar under the photo
Quote on a dark bar Quote text on a dark bar
Quote over the photo Quote text on the photo itself
Before and after Two panels for comparisons
Four panels Four panels in one image
Story 9:16 Tall format for stories

The tool offers one, two or four panels depending on the layout.

Text settings that matter

  • Top and bottom text fields are ready for the classic format.
  • Extra text blocks can go anywhere, including on the bar outside the photo. Use the horizontal and vertical position controls or drag the text in the preview.
  • Text size defaults to 10%. “Make long text smaller to fit” shrinks long lines automatically. The block width defaults to 94%.
  • Outline defaults to 12%, with a colour you can pick. It keeps white text readable on bright photos.
  • Shadow defaults to 0%, and line spacing to 1.1.

Readability beats cleverness. Keep the text short, put it where it does not cover faces, and check it on a small screen.

Choose a font

The default is an Impact-style font (Anton), the classic meme look. Sans-serif, Serif and Monospace use fonts that are already on your device, so the result may look slightly different across devices. If exact appearance matters, use the default font.

Output size and format

The shape defaults to “Same as the photo”. You can pick presets from 1:1 to 3:4 or a custom size with a “Longest side (px)” value.

Format When to choose it
JPG Default for sharing everywhere
PNG Sharp text edges, larger files
WebP Smaller files for modern apps and websites
AVIF Smallest files, slower to create, may not open in older programs

Quality defaults to 92%. If a platform limits file size, run the result through Compress Image or read how to compress an image to under 100 KB. For differences between formats, see JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs AVIF. For platform shapes, see the social media image sizes cheat sheet.

Prepare the photo first

A good meme usually starts with a good crop. If the subject is small or off-centre, crop it first with Crop Image, then add your text.

Privacy

The meme is made on your device. The tool saves a file with your photo and your text, nothing else, and does not add a watermark.

Do it now

Open the Meme Generator, add your own photo and write the caption.

Frequently asked questions

Does the meme generator include meme templates?

It includes layouts (the shape, bars and text style) but no meme images. You bring your own photo. The layouts keep your photo and your words.

Is there a watermark on the result?

No. The file contains your photo and your text, nothing else.

Which font does it use?

The default is an Impact-style font (Anton). Sans-serif, Serif and Monospace use fonts already on your device, so they can look different on different devices.

Which format should I save?

JPG is the safest choice for sharing. PNG keeps text edges crisp but gives larger files. WebP is smaller. AVIF takes longer to create, and some older programs cannot open it.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The meme is made in your browser.
