Short answer: open Imgovo’s GIF & Animated WebP Tools, add your animation and choose what to do: make it smaller by resizing, convert GIF to animated WebP or back, or save its frames as PNG, JPG or WebP pictures. Every frame keeps its delay, and nothing is uploaded.

What the tool can do

Task How
Make a GIF or WebP smaller Resize by width and height, with presets for 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%
Convert between formats Result as same as original, GIF or animated WebP
Optimise file size The “File size” option stores only the parts of each frame that change
Save frames as pictures One frame or all frames as PNG, JPG or WebP; all frames come in one ZIP

Frames are saved at the full size of the animation.

Step by step

  1. Open GIF & Animated WebP Tools and add your file.
  2. Choose the task: resize, convert, optimise or extract frames.
  3. Set the options (see below).
  4. Run it. The page compares size, frame count, duration and repeats before and after.
  5. Download the new file, or the frames as pictures or a ZIP. Long animations are processed frame by frame to keep memory use low, and you can cancel at any time.

Options for resizing and converting

  • Scaling: choose Smooth for photos and Sharp Pixels for pixel art or screenshots with hard edges.
  • GIF palette: use one palette for all frames or one per frame. A palette per frame can look better but makes the file larger. Dithering can smooth colour gradients.
  • WebP quality: a number such as 80 trades size against detail.
  • Fill colour: used for areas that must be filled.

GIF or animated WebP?

GIF Animated WebP
Plays almost everywhere Yes Mostly, but not in some older programs and messengers
Colours 256 per frame More colours
Transparency Hard edges only Soft transparency
File size Larger Usually smaller

Converting a GIF to WebP does not create colours that were never there. Converting a WebP to GIF, on the other hand, reduces the colours to a 256-colour palette per frame, so photos may look rougher. Pick the format that your target accepts, and compare the sizes the tool shows.

What stays the same

  • Frames: Imgovo never removes, merges or reorders frames.
  • Timing: every frame keeps its own delay and the number of repeats is carried over.
  • Transparency: transparent areas stay transparent, and frames that store only partial changes are read correctly.
  • GIF timing detail: GIF stores delays in steps of 10 ms, so a delay from a WebP is rounded to the nearest step. Very short GIF delays may play slowly in some browsers. The tool keeps the original delays and warns you when they are that short.

What the tool does not do

  • It does not process animated AVIF. Reading and writing animated AVIF needs decoders and encoders that browsers do not provide in a form that works everywhere, so the tool says it cannot process the file.
  • It does not process APNG. The file is recognised and left as it is, and an APNG is never opened as a single picture.
  • It does not carry over metadata. Comments, camera data and colour profiles of the original are not copied, and colours are converted to sRGB when the original has a colour profile.
  • It does not change the speed of an animation, because every frame keeps its delay.

Limits

  • A single frame can hold up to 36 megapixels.
  • GIF files can be up to 65,535 px per side, and WebP files up to 16,383 px per side.
  • There is no daily limit, watermark or sign-up.

Getting a smaller file

  1. Reduce the dimensions first. Halving width and height removes about three quarters of the pixels in every frame.
  2. Use the File size option, which stores only what changes between frames.
  3. For GIF, avoid a separate palette per frame if size matters more than colour accuracy.
  4. For WebP, lower the quality a little.
  5. Compare before and after in the results panel. If the new file is larger, keep the original.

For general advice on file size, see How to compress an image to under 100 KB.

Save a single frame

To use one frame as a poster image or thumbnail, extract it as PNG for sharpness, or JPG or WebP for a smaller file. The format differences are in JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs AVIF. Note that the single-image tools on Imgovo use the first frame of a GIF, and only the animation tools keep every frame. If you only need an animated WebP as a still JPG, WebP to JPG converts the first frame, as explained in How to convert WebP to JPG.

Privacy

Everything runs locally in your browser in a background worker, and no file, frame or result is sent anywhere. The tool is free.

Do it now

Open GIF & Animated WebP Tools, add your animation and compare the sizes before you download.

Frequently asked questions

Will the new file be smaller?

Not guaranteed. The tool shows the real sizes after each run and says clearly when the new file is larger. Smaller dimensions usually help the most.

GIF or animated WebP, which should I choose?

GIF plays almost everywhere but is limited to 256 colours per frame and has no soft transparency. Animated WebP keeps more colours and is usually smaller, but some older programs and messengers do not play it.

Does converting a GIF to WebP add colours?

No. Converting a GIF to WebP does not add colours that were never there. The gain is mainly in file size and in how the file handles new edits.

Does the tool remove or change frames?

No. Imgovo never removes, merges or reorders frames. Every frame keeps its own delay, and the number of repeats is carried over.

Can it process animated AVIF or APNG?

No. Animated AVIF and animated PNG (APNG) are recognised but not processed, and your file is left as it is.

Is my animation uploaded?

No. Your browser processes it locally in a background worker. No file, frame or result is sent anywhere.
