How to Convert WebP to JPG (and Why Websites Save Images as WebP)
On this page
Short answer: to turn a WebP image into a JPG, open Imgovo’s WebP to JPG converter, drop in your files and download the JPGs. Transparent areas turn white and animated WebP files keep only their first frame. For transparency, choose WebP to PNG. The conversion runs in your browser, so the images are not uploaded.
Why is my image a WebP?
WebP is an image format developed for the web. It can use lossy or lossless compression, supports transparency and can be animated. Websites like it because the files are usually smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality, so pages load faster. The converter page quotes a typical saving of 25–35% compared with JPG, but the real difference depends on the image and the encoder.
When you save an image from a website, your browser stores the file in the format the site delivered. That is why a picture you expected to be a JPG arrives as a .webp file.
Why WebP causes problems
WebP works in all current browsers and most modern apps. Trouble comes from:
- Older software that cannot open it.
- Upload forms that accept only JPG, PNG or PDF.
- Printing services and some editors that do not read it.
- Messengers and email clients that behave differently from one version to the next.
JPG, in contrast, opens almost everywhere.
Step by step
- Open WebP to JPG.
- Add one file or many. You can drop them in or select them.
- Each file is converted straight away. The quality is set to 90% by default. Adjust it if you like.
- Download the files one by one, or all together as a ZIP.
You can undo and redo with the buttons above the file list or with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z. They restore removed files, bring back a cleared list and revert quality or format changes.
What changes during the conversion
| WebP feature | Result as JPG |
|---|---|
| Transparent background | Becomes white |
| Animation | Only the first frame is kept |
| Lossless WebP | Becomes lossy JPG, so it is encoded again |
| Colour and detail | Very similar at high quality |
| File size | Can be larger than the WebP |
Transparency
JPG has no transparency. A logo or cut-out with a transparent background will have a white background after conversion. If you need to keep the transparent area, use WebP to PNG. The page does not offer a choice of a different background colour for JPG.
Animated WebP
Only the first frame becomes a JPG. If you want to keep or convert the animation, or save every frame as a picture, use the tools described in How to edit or convert animated GIF and WebP.
Quality
Every JPG is re-encoded, which discards some detail. At the default 90% the difference is rarely visible. If you plan to edit the picture further, keep the original WebP or choose PNG.
Should I choose JPG or PNG?
| Choose | When |
|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, forms, email, anything that needs to open everywhere |
| PNG | Transparency, screenshots, graphics with sharp edges, or no further loss |

The other direction: JPG to WebP
If you run a website, the other direction may be what you need. JPG to WebP and PNG to WebP make smaller web images. The Image Converter covers other combinations. Smaller pictures help pages load faster, but the format must be accepted wherever the file will be used.

Frequently asked questions
Why was my downloaded image saved as WebP?
Many websites serve WebP because it is smaller and loads faster. Your browser saves the file in the format the website delivered, so the picture you see as a normal image can be a .webp file when you save it.
What happens to transparency when I convert WebP to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
What happens to an animated WebP?
Only the first frame is converted, because JPG cannot store animation. To keep the animation, use the GIF and animated WebP tools.
Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so the image is encoded again and a small amount of detail can be lost. The default quality is 90%, which you can adjust. If you want no further loss, convert to PNG.
Can I convert many WebP files at once?
Yes. Add as many images as you like. They are converted one after another and you can download them individually or all together as a ZIP.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and the images are never sent to Imgovo or anyone else.
